Fun Songs! Jesus Loves The Little … (fill in the blank!)

Kids love the traditional “Jesus Loves the Little Children” song.

Jesus loves the little children

All the children of the world

Red and yellow, black and white

They are precious in his sight

Jesus love the little children of the world

Sing it loud and often!

Kids also love hearing their name. So for a fun change-up to the song, we swap out “children” for their names.

Jesus loves the little August

All the Augusts of the world

Red and yellow, black and white

They are precious in his sight

Jesus love the little Augusts of the world

But don’t stop there! Let your kid pick out who else Jesus loves.

Our two-year-old always wants to include the Mamas. And the Daddys. As well as Nanas and Babies and other family members.

He even wants to include the animals and inanimate objects in his life: puppies, blocks, and bananas. The song can be fun for quite some time!

Singing this song in its traditional way teaches children that Jesus loves everyone. It doesn’t matter what color we are or where we live.

I think of it as a good balance to the way we often emphasize to a child that Jesus came specifically out of love for him or her. It’s a true and important thing to underscore, but it’s not the whole story. I want my children to open their eyes and hearts to the other people Jesus died for.

I realize personalizing this song goes against what I just said about teaching kids that Jesus loves everyone. But maybe it doesn’t. Maybe it hints at the fact that other people in the world might share his name. All the Augusts in the world – all of them – are loved by God.

And … well … it is also true that Jesus loves you individually. Jesus loves the little YOU!

Question for you: Are there any songs that you and your child likes to personalize?
